To get a design of the scale and finish that we have, with the lifespan the facility has, at probably a quarter of the price of a traditional build makes this a really good option that more Councils should consider.

Scheme Journey

Creating becontree Leisure Centre

01

The
Vision

More Water.
More Opportunity.

Becontree Heath Leisure Centre was already one of the UK’s most visited leisure facilities, welcoming around 475,000 swims every year. But its existing 25m pool could no longer accommodate growing demand from Learn to Swim and the local swimming club.

The ambition was bigger than simply adding more water space. The Council and operator wanted to create an Olympic length 50m pool that would expand swimming opportunities for the whole community while remaining within a budget of less than £2.5 million.

Making 50
Metres Possible

A permanent 50m Olympic length pool for less than £2.5 million demanded a different way of thinking.

Rather than allowing the constraints of traditional pool development to dictate what was possible, ReCreation looked differently at the site, the technology and the development model. Unused land behind the existing leisure centre became the opportunity for an above ground solution that could deliver the additional water space the community needed within budget.

ReCreation Collective

One Ambition.
Collective Expertise.

ReCreation brought together the specialist expertise needed to turn an ambitious idea into an achievable leisure solution.

Design, engineering, commercial, project and aquatic expertise worked collectively around one objective: creating a high quality, permanent 50m facility that connected with the existing leisure centre while delivering exceptional value.

From Unused Land
to 50 Metres

The solution was a permanent above ground 50m swimming pool, annexed to the existing Becontree Heath Leisure Centre and designed to sit comfortably alongside the original building.

The development incorporated the constant depth pool, superstructure, plant room, changing facilities and reception space. The result became the first permanent Olympic length swimming pool delivered using Modern Methods of Construction for less than £2.5 million.

Beyond
Construction

Powering More
Than
the Pool

The impact extended beyond additional swimming provision. The scheme also incorporated a District Heating Network providing heat and power to more than 250 local homes and a Civic Centre.

Becontree demonstrates what becomes possible when the starting point is not simply the facility, but the wider value it can create for the people and places around it.

MORE WATER. WIDER IMPACT. GREATER VALUE.
