Vision
Keeping Swimming in
The Community
The Dukeries Leisure Centre was facing a critical challenge. Its ageing pool provision dated back to the 1950s, operating costs were rising and the loss of usable water space was putting the future of local swimming at risk.
The ambition was to protect community access to swimming with a modern, accessible facility that could also support shared use with the neighbouring academy and connect effectively with the existing leisure centre.
A £12m Rebuild
Wasn’t the Answer
With the cost of a traditional replacement estimated at around £12 million, simply rebuilding what was already there was becoming increasingly difficult to justify.
ReCreation helped create a different route forward. Instead of accepting that modern swimming provision had to come with a conventional price tag, the project embraced prefabricated pool technology and a more efficient approach to development.

ReCreation’s approach brought together the expertise needed to rethink what was possible within the available investment.
Aquatic, design, engineering, commercial and project expertise could be considered together, creating a solution focused not only on delivering new water space, but on accessibility, connectivity, operational efficiency and the long term needs of the community.
A Smarter Way to Add Water
A new 20m x 10m five lane pool was created adjoining the existing leisure centre, incorporating a unisex changing village, spectator area, pool plant, reception, storage and accessible facilities.
Prefabricated pool tank technology, a structural steel frame and a reinforced concrete mezzanine helped reduce programme and cost while creating a facility that integrated with the existing dry side leisure provision.

Dukeries replaced lost swimming capacity and created opportunities for new community activities, while achieving the development with a more modest capital investment and without increasing staffing overheads.
The new facility also supports shared use with the academy, helping swimming remain accessible to both the wider community and the next generation.
